The State Café & Catering Restaurant began in December of 1997 in the former Diggie's restaurant, located in the State Theatre building.
The owner, Brenda Markin, purchased the business after after a successful corporate career which she gladly gave up after both her sons were born. With 25 years of experience, she brought fresh ideas to the concession style food place and slowly added menu items to appeal to the downtown business people. With the help of Sandra Brown, a talented baker and cook, Brenda helped developed a small catering menu.
A year and a half later, the tiny 7 seat restaurant could no longer hold the lunch crowd, and the catering business was growing fast. The former Dunkin Donuts location in downtown South Bend became available and The State Cafe moved in July of 1999.
With the move, The State Cafe & Catering could now hold 68 guest and with the expanded kitchen, came more catering opportunities.
Famous for our "Hot Dog Monday," fresh homemade soups, salads, salad bar & hearty specials, The State Cafe continues to grow with many dedicated customers.
